Children Of Illegal Immigrants – Will They Only Be Allowed The Citizenships?

Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Since the Comprehensive Immigration Reform passed the Senate in June this year, the bill still stays at the House of Representatives and awaiting verdict. While the 435 congressmen who are composed of 233 Republicans, 200 Democrats and two independents whose seats are vacant, we know that Republicans don’t really like many things about the bill. In fact, they are actually “against legalizing illegal immigrants” at all. But because some of them are under pressure from their own parties which are composed of Hispanics and religious groups, most of them now want to talk about changing the most significant context of the bill and that only the children of the 11 million undocumented immigrants that have been brought up in the U.S. by their parents before the age of 16 should be legalized.

Why Only the Children?

According to Rep. Bob Goodlatte, House Judiciary Committee Chairman, the children of these illegal immigrants don’t have any part with the mistakes of their parents (illegal crossing) so they deserve to be considered having the legal citizenship. But why do these lawmakers are really hard on excluding the parents? Because majority of the Republican congressmen are convinced that legalizing illegal immigrants is like giving citizenships to lawbreakers. On the other hand, although a lot of Republicans also agree with the Democrats about the flaws in the immigration system, most of them still think that the time is not yet ripe to hand out free citizenship to illegal cross borders.

Among the so called 11 million undocumented immigrants that the Democrats would like to approve citizenship, 2 million of these are kids of these immigrants and have entered the United States illegally while under the age of 16.

Rep. Goodlatte is now discussing with House Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor how it would be possible to retain the kids’ right for citizenships. Right now the two congressmen are not talking about the legislation details but there is a chance that what they can agree upon would be different from the contents of the comprehensive immigration reform bill in which the Democrat senators have written. On the other hand, there are also many Republicans who do not totally agree with separating the immigrant kids from their parents so up to now, the decision among the Republican congressmen are not yet in order.

What The Kids’ Say

Incidentally, the DREAMers (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors), who are composed of the children of illegal immigrants are not happy about the Republican congressmen’s decision because they mainly could not agree on getting separated from their parents. For them, this is obviously a deliberate discrimination on their part because their parents are seen as lawbreakers while the politicians want them to get separated from their parents.

With the kids’ immigrants reaction to the congressmen’s supposed to be act of consideration, some Republicans are also getting frustrated over the kids’ appeals of awarding citizenship to all undocumented foreigners which include their parents. However, majority of the Republican congressmen have the conviction that being an undocumented alien does not always make the person a citizen of America.

While we are still wondering what would happen with the immigration reform bill at the House, the Senate now is on a calmer state but it has already showed to the world that with unity and communication, anybody even opposing parties can meet on certain level. Thanks to the support of 14 Republican senators the passing of the immigration bill is now considered a milestone in the American immigration system.

So in essence, if this would bill would be approved at the House, this would enhance the number of work visas that can be granted to skilled foreign workers, reinforce border security at the U.S.-Mexico border and there could the granting of 13-year path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants. Looking at it closely, the main context of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill is not only for the benefits of the illegal immigrants having their citizenships but for America as a whole in terms of their contributions to American economy.

The Possible Strategies

Right now at the House, Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has a plan of pushing the House to comply with the Senate bill and said she would encourage a minimum of 25 Republicans to join the Democrats congressman so that the Senate bill could pass the House smoothly. Although Pelosi knows that this could be a mission impossible for her, she said she would try her best to make this happen.

As expected, there will many talks about the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill at the House and we are still not sure if it will come out in one piece or it will not come out at all. Ironically now that most Republican congressmen wanted to legislate a bill that would allow the children of illegal immigrants to earn their citizenships, the DREAMers themselves would not agree.

In view of the fact that immigration is really a sensitive issue while the U.S. politicians at the House of Representatives are perpetually divided, it is unavoidable that the illegal immigrants could feel that the Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill is still in its unachievable state. And now that their families could be torn apart if the Republicans would be successful with their biddings, these immigrants would have to live in the U.S. with more fears in their minds.
